PAIRINGS MADE FOR VOLLEYBALL STATE TOURNAMENT
The pairings for the 39th Annual IHSAA Volleyball State Tournament Series were drawn this morning by Commissioner Blake Ress at the IHSAA Office in Indianapolis.
Three hundred ninety-seven schools (397) have entered this year’s tournament with sectional play beginning on Tuesday, Oct. 19, and continuing through Saturday, Oct. 23, at 64 sites across four classifications.
Beginning with the regional round, this year’s state tournament will take on a different format from previous years as the Saturday morning state semifinal matches, which had been held at four different satellite sites since 2000, have been dropped. Instead, a one-match regional on the home court of one of the participating teams will be played on Tuesday, October 26, to be followed by a four-team semi-state on Saturday, October 30. Four state championship matches at Ball State University’s Worthen Arena on Saturday, November 6, will be the endpoint.
Muncie Burris, the 13-time defending 2A state champion, and Brebeuf Jesuit, last year’s 3A winner, both sit atop their respective classes according to the latest state coaches poll. The Owls, winners of 89 consecutive tournament matches over the last 13 years, drew the bye in Sectional 41 at Lapel and will face the Alexandria-Elwood winner. Brebeuf Jesuit will face Beech Grove in Sectional 26 at Indianapolis Howe.
In Class 4A, top-ranked Penn will host South Bend Riley in the Sectional 3 opener while defending state champ and No. 2 Muncie Central plays host to Pendleton Heights in Sectional 9.
In Class A, top-ranked Barr-Reeve will attempt to advance to its third consecutive state finals and will begin by taking on host North Daviess in the Sectional 62 opener. Six-time defending state champion Marquette Catholic, unranked in the current poll, will face home-standing Triton in Sectional 51.
