Greensburg overcomes Bowman's pressure in Class 3A
The Greensburg Pirates probed Bowman Academy's full-court defense, found the openings and set a  Class 3A championship game scoring record with an 89-76 victory over the Eagles.

The outcome meant a second consecutive state championship for the Pirates. Bowman, the 2013 champion in 2A and the 2010 champ in Class A, was denied in its bid to become the first boys basketball team to win a state title in three different classifications.

Greenburg turned the ball over 22 times against Bowman's withering pressure. But when the Pirates broke the press, they generally located good shots on the way to 56.4 percent shooting (31-of-55) from the field. They hit 57.1 percent (12-of-21) on 3-pointers.

An 18-3 run from the late third quarter into the fourth opened a 19-point lead for Greensburg. Collin Rigney connected on four 3-pointers during the surge.

Bowman battled back, slicing its deficit to nine (81-72) with about 2 minutes remaining, but the Pirates held on.

Sean Sellers led the Pirates with 27 points and 16 rebounds. Rigney hit 23 points. Ryan Welage had 21 points. Bryant McIntosh had 11 assists, tying a 3A title-game record.

Coach Stacy Meyer's Greensburg team, ranked first in the Associated Press poll, finished the season with a 15-game winning streak and a 28-1 record.

For Bowman Academy, Davon Dillard led the way with 21 points. Austin Daniels added 14, and Anthony Cole had 12. Justin King and Arthur Haggard III each contributed 11 points. King grabbed 11 rebounds.

Coach Marvin  Rea's Eagles, ranked third by the AP, finished 22-5.

Greensburg’s Macy Holdsworth wins Trester Mental Attitude Award
Following the game, members of the IHSAA Executive Committee named Macy Holdsworth of Greensburg High School as the winner of the Arthur L. Trester Mental Attitude Award in Class 3A Boys Basketball.

The award is annually presented to a senior participant in the state finals who best demonstrates mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability and is named after the IHSAA’s first commissioner who served the Association from 1929 to 1944.

Holdsworth ranks seventh in his senior class of 135 students with a 3.9 GPA. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the Student Council and has been an academic mentor for junior high students in the community. He’s coached youth basketball and baseball teams for four years each and is also president of his Church Youth Group. Besides being a four-year varsity starter for the Pirates, he anticipates starting for a fourth year for the baseball team this spring.

He is the son of Scott and Kara Holdsworth of Greensburg and plans to study Physical Therapy at Indiana University where he will play baseball for the Hoosiers.

The Indiana Pacers and Indiana Fever, the presenting sponsor of the IHSAA Boys Basketball State Tournament, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Greensburg High School in the name of Holdsworth. Since 1989, more than $800,000 in college scholarships have been presented to deserving high school athletes in Indiana.
