HAMILTON SOUTHEASTERN REPEATS, CHESTERTON’S GRASSEL WIN GOLF TITLES
Hamilton Southeastern repeated as the team champion while Chesterton’s Kelly Grassel captured the individual crown during the 39th Annual IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals at The Legends Golf Club in Franklin.

The second-ranked Royals (316-328-644) held a five-stroke lead over top-ranked Penn (321-325-646) after Friday’s opening round and after the two teams traded leads on Saturday, HSE regained it for good over the final three holes. It was the third state title in four years for the school and the fourth in the last nine seasons. Steve Guenin has been the coach for the last three.

Three players finished among the top 15 individuals for Hamilton Southeastern. Senior Brooke Beegle finished second overall (73-76-149), classmate Anne Leighty tied for 12th (77-83-160) and sophomore Mary Ellen Romero tied for 15th (81-82-163). Soph Lauren Kirkwood tied for 33rd (85-87-172) and senior Kelsey St. John ended 50th (90-102-192).

Roncalli (328-326-654) placed third and Noblesville (336-337-673) and Yorktown (335-338-673) tied for fourth place.

Grassel (75-73-148) became the first Chesterton golfer – girl or boy – to capture the blue ribbon medal. The junior began the day two strokes behind Beegle and overcame a slow start on Saturday which saw her bogey three of the first four holes. She shot par or better on the next 12 holes and claimed the one-stroke victory while bogies on 16 and 17 cost Beegle.

Castle junior Kayla Katterhenry (79-73-152) placed third at four strokes back while Madison freshman Amanda Detmer (77-77-154) and Roncalli senior Anna Gleixner (77-77-154) tied for fourth.
