The Westview Warriors became the first school to win back-to-back state title in the multiple-class format

With a 59-53 triumph over Winchester in the Class 2A state championship March 25, 2000 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

The Warriors never trailed, and rode hot three-point shooting to take a 16-4 early lead to proved decisive.

Westview (25-3) was led by Adam Bontreger who came off the bench to score 16 points, 10 above his season average. Mark Miller scored 13 points, 11 coming in the first quarter, on five-of-10 shooting from the field and three-of-five from the three-point arch.

Winchester (22-6) trailed 40-25 at halftime, but managed to outscore Westview 19-7 in the third quarter to stay within striking distance. The Golden Falcons punctuated their rally on Joel Weigand's 30-foot jumper as the quarter ended and Westview holding a 47-44 edge.

Winchester, who saw four starters score in double figures, committed only four turnovers in the first half, none in the third quarter and only two in the fourth quarter, but never got closer than three points in the second half.

CLASS 2A POST-GAME QUOTES

WINCHESTER COACH CHIP MEHAFFEY

"We struggled to get them under control for quite a while. We really weren’t contesting a lot of those looks (in the first half). We really struggled with our rotation the first half. The second half we felt like we got back to our system (on defense)."

"You miss your first couple of shots and sometimes players will tighten up. The didn’t and it just seemed to snowball. At halftime we got a little bit better (defensive) scheme going."

WINCHESTER PLAYER JOEL WEIGAND

"Going in and coming out we needed to get some key stops and we didn’t get them."

WINCHESTER PLAYER AND TRESTER AWARD RECIPIENT SCOTT STUDY

"They were applying pressure, but nothing I haven’t seen before."

westview coach troy neely

"We could have folded up when they made a run at us in the second half, but our seniors came through."

ON THE CHAMPIONSHIP: "It's sweet every time you get here. Our seniors have been winners throughout their career. We came out all keyed up right off the bat. They have planted a seed in Westview history that will be hard to duplicate."

"The way they played Adam Bontreger, they didn't account for him. Jeff Nelson is an unselfish player. Every game, Nelson sets the tempo. They tried to stop the twos, so Nelson gave the ball up and the other guys stepped up for the threes. Jeff Ponce played well for us."

"I was afraid that if we lost our last game, we wouldn't be remembered for everything they've accomplished."

"Winchester had a great game plan. They tried to stop Nelson inside, so we went to the outside game."

"Last year I was ecstatic, this year I'm overwhelmed. These guys deserve to go out on top."

ON CONTINUING COACHING: "I'm 50-50. It will depend on the next three months that will determine that. I love these seniors, but we have good players coming up. I still love coaching and I hope I will stay in it."

"Last year, the shooting background on the Dome was more wide-open. This year, this was a better place to play in and the shooting background was better."
